Middle Grade / Upper Grade Positions

WHEELS is seeking highly qualified teachers to join our Grades 6-12 in the 2017-2018 school year.  The successful candidate will embody best classroom instructional practices and honor the diverse cultural backgrounds of our students and families. The candidate will be a reflective, innovative educator who is able to collaborate with colleagues to create a highly engaging curriculum for our students that is aligned with the Expeditionary Learning Core Practices and WHEELS’ vision and core values.

We are looking for applicants that have:

  • A mindset that takes responsibility for student results

  • A deep respect for the teaching profession and its complexity, and a strong desire to constantly improve and extend their teaching practice in collaboration with others

  • High expectations for student engagement and academic achievement

  • The ability to build relational trust with, students, families, teachers, and school leaders

  • The willingness to reflect upon daily realities with humility and from multiple perspectives


  • NYCDOE certified or eligible for certification

  • Special Education certification a plus

  • Classroom experience in an urban, progressive setting and/or with a project-based curriculum


  • Designing and implementing “backwards-planned” curriculum

  • Executing high quality, productive, efficient, and rigorous lessons on a daily basis

  • Designing and implementing assessments that measure academic growth, and using regular student data from assessments to inform planning and instruction

  • Working collaboratively with students, family, teachers, and administrators to build and maintain a familial and safe school culture and community that supports achievement

  • Working collaboratively with teachers, teacher-leaders, and administrators in professional development opportunities during the summer and school year

  • Serving as an advisor to a small group of students, and acting as a liaison between the school and families

  • Maintaining a strong work ethic, a professional attitude, and a willingness to assume a variety of roles

  • Possessing a willingness to embrace certain agreed upon school-wide systems, policies and practices that we have identified as effective
