Our Mission
At Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS), our mission is to work with families to prepare each sixth – twelfth grade student academically, emotionally, intellectually and socially to succeed in a college of her/his choice and beyond.
Our goal is to be a safe, secure and nurturing environment for adolescents, a place where high expectations, excellent academic practices and highly-qualified faculty provide differentiated instruction to every learner. Our school community provides each student with the academic rigor and preparation necessary to attend college and to practice the skills necessary for effective participation in our democratic society.
Our History
WHEELS opened in the fall of 2006 in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, as a new school in Community School District (CSD) 6, the most over-crowded school district in New York City. WHEELS currently enrolls 560 students in the 6th through 12th grades.
